Community Awareness and Health Education Description
The Partnership for
Community Awareness and Health Education (PCAHE)
is a multi-level, systematic approach to
garnering support from all segments of the
community. PCAHE is premised on respect
for the knowledge and expertise community
residents bring to the table to solve problems.
It is doing “with” and not doing “to” the
community. Effective community partnership
presupposes that “local people are best able to
solve local problems and that they will support
what they help create.” In this effort, PCAHE
has organized a very comprehensive committee
structure representing all sectors of the
community. These efforts are guided by the
Community Partnership Steering Committee and
Subgroup committees to ensure that input is
received from a broad range of community
representatives including health care providers,
health departments, political and elected
officials, religious denominations, educational
institutions, media and communications, business
and industry, community leaders, nonprofit and
charitable organizations. The committee
structure and composition is constantly evolving
as we attempt to mobilize residents in Hinds,
Madison and Rankin counties in support of the
Jackson Heart Study.

JHS Community Health Advisor Network (CHAN)
The Jackson Heart Study has organized a Community Health Advisor Network in Bolton/Edwards, Canton, Clinton, Jackson and Pearl, Mississippi. The Community Health Advisors in your communities have received 30 hours of training on the modifiable risks of heart disease as well as leadership skills. Many have also received the Know-Your-Numbers training sponsored by the Mississippi Chronic Illness Coalition. The Jackson Heart Study salutes the 80 plus CHA volunteers who are promoting heart health and fighting the NO. 1 killer of African Americans: HEART DISEASE in their communities in the following ways:
·
Providing culturally appropriate heart health information to the Jackson Heart Study community during presentations and health fair displays,
· Serving as a liaison between the Jackson Heart Study and the greater community,
· Serving as a resource for their community regarding heart health awareness and CVD research,
· Delivering JHS awareness and retention messages,
· Modeling heart healthy lifestyles and behaviors, and
· Translating scientific, medical language into “community friendly” language.
